Goals

Learning objectives

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • ✓Compute unit rates from ratios of fractions.
  • ✓Recognize proportional relationships and find the constant of proportionality (k).
  • ✓Write equations in the form y = kx.
  • ✓Solve multi-step percent problems: tax, tip, markup, discount, and percent change.

Key vocabulary

Unit rate
A rate with a denominator of 1, like miles per hour.
Proportional relationship
Two quantities with a constant ratio; graphs as a straight line through the origin.
Constant of proportionality
The fixed ratio k in the equation y = kx.
Percent change
How much a quantity increased or decreased, as a percent of the original.
