Get variables together

  1. 1Add or subtract to move all variable terms to one side.
  2. 2Move constants to the other side.
  3. 3Divide to isolate the variable.
Worked example

Solve 2x + 3 = 5x - 6.

  1. →Subtract 2x from both sides: 3 = 3x - 6.
  2. →Add 6: 9 = 3x.
  3. →Divide by 3: x = 3.

Special cases

If the variables cancel and you get a false statement (3 = 5), there is no solution. If you get a true statement (4 = 4), there are infinitely many solutions.
