Volume of Cylinders, Cones & Spheres

Apply the three key volume formulas with π.

αAπΣ∞∂θ√x²≠∫÷≤%+½αβΔ
Step 1 · Learn

Walkthrough

Read this first — it covers the idea in plain language with a worked example.

Three formulas

  1. 1Cylinder: V = πr²h.
  2. 2Cone: V = (1/3)πr²h — a third of a cylinder with the same base and height.
  3. 3Sphere: V = (4/3)πr³.
Worked example

Find the volume of a cylinder with radius 3 and height 5 (use π ≈ 3.14).

  1. →V = πr²h = 3.14 × 3² × 5.
  2. →= 3.14 × 9 × 5 = 141.3 cubic units.

Tip

A cone holds exactly one-third of the cylinder with the same base and height — that's where the 1/3 comes from.
